27 Years Since KLA Transformation and Establishment of Kosovo Security Institutions
The transformation of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) into the Kosovo Protection Corps (KPC) 27 years ago was a pivotal moment for Kosovo's security framework. This transition, finalized in 90 days under international supervision, laid the groundwork for the current Kosovo Security Force, which plays a crucial role in national defense and international peacekeeping.

On September 20, 1999, the KLA was officially transformed into the KPC, a civilian emergency organization, not a military force. The agreement included the surrender of weapons, temporary retention of uniforms, and integration of former members into various institutions, all completed within 90 days.
This process was vital for establishing local security capacities post-war and has led to the creation of the Kosovo Security Force, which protects sovereignty and supports international missions. The KPC was viewed by many former KLA members as a step towards a local defense force, culminating in today's Kosovo Security Force, which is regarded as a source of national pride.
