3D Printed Solid Oxide Battery Enhances Predictive Maintenance in Steel Production
The 3Dstore initiative, led by IREC, UOC, and CELSA, has developed a 3D printed solid oxide battery for predictive maintenance in the steel industry. This technology aims to minimize unplanned machinery failures, reducing downtime costs significantly.

The 3Dstore project has introduced a solid oxide battery designed for high-temperature environments, enabling predictive maintenance in steel production. This monitoring system, developed by IREC, UOC, CELSA, and other partners, detects early signs of equipment failure using a low-consumption electronic unit placed on a rolling mill at CELSA.
The initiative not only prevents production halts but also reduces energy consumption and environmental impact by avoiding unnecessary gas use in furnaces during unplanned downtime. Future plans include expanding this technology to other applications, including critical infrastructure, while enhancing the reliability of sensing systems in extreme conditions.
