70% of Moroccan SMEs Engaged in Decarbonization Efforts, Says EIB Survey
An EIB survey reveals that 70% of Moroccan SMEs are engaged in decarbonization processes. 48% have initiated actions, while 22% actively implement a clear strategy. As Morocco advances its low-carbon economy strategy, 29% of SMEs plan to adopt measures to reduce their carbon footprint. The EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) set to take effect in 2026 poses a competitive risk for SMEs not addressing carbon emissions. The Trade and Competitiveness Programme offers support to help SMEs integrate decarbonization into their business models.

Seventy percent of Moroccan SMEs are engaged in varying degrees of decarbonization, according to an EIB survey under the Trade and Competitiveness Programme co-funded by the EU. Out of 150 surveyed SME leaders, 48% have implemented initiatives, while 22% have a clear strategy in active application.
With 29% planning to reduce their carbon footprint soon, only 1% do not foresee specific actions. The upcoming 2026 EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) emphasizes the need for carbon reduction.
To assist SMEs, TCP is providing sessions on environmental market requirements and decarbonization integration. Nearly 80% of SMEs report efforts in digitalization, with 22% at an advanced level. Support expectations from international organizations are high, particularly for innovation and capacity-building programs.
