75 MW Hydra Hybrid Renewables-Battery Project Launches in South Africa
The Hydra project, a hybrid renewable energy facility in South Africa, has commenced operations, supplying 75 MW of dispatchable power. This project is pivotal in addressing South Africa's energy crisis and enhancing grid stability through renewable resources.

The Hydra project has officially launched, providing 75 MW of dispatchable renewable electricity to South Africa's national grid from 5:00am to 9:30pm daily. Developed by TotalEnergies, Hydra Storage Holding, and Reatile Renewables, the facility combines a 216 MW solar PV plant with a 500 MWh battery energy storage system, generating over 400 GWh of electricity annually.
The project was procured under the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme initiated in August 2020 during a significant loadshedding crisis. Its operation is expected to enhance energy security and contribute to decarbonizing the country's electricity generation. However, previous gas-to-power initiatives under RMIPPPP faced criticism and were ultimately abandoned.
