AAMA Proposes Actions for Africa in Response to IMO's Net Zero Framework for Shipping
African maritime experts have outlined recommendations to mitigate risks and leverage opportunities from the IMO's Net Zero Framework on shipping emissions. The Association of African Maritime Administrations (AAMA) convened in Mombasa, Kenya, to address impacts on African economies. They proposed actions for equitable implementation of the framework, fair revenue allocation from maritime carbon pricing, and a collaborative approach for capacity building. A roadmap for Africa's maritime transition and engagement with the IMO was also recommended.
The AAMA has developed recommendations to address the risks and opportunities presented by the IMO's Net Zero Framework (NZF) on shipping emissions. At a recent workshop in Mombasa, they called for priority actions to mitigate adverse impacts on African economies and promote fairness in implementation.
The AAMA aims to consolidate member states' proposals for submission to the IMO, advocate for equitable carbon pricing, and pursue coordinated engagement with partners for financing green transitions. A roadmap with timelines for implementation and periodic check-ins was also proposed to ensure progress towards meeting the NZF objectives.
