AfDB Rates Morocco's Energy and Water Progress as Very Satisfactory
Morocco's energy and water sectors have received a 'very satisfactory' rating from the African Development Bank, reflecting significant advancements. The country aims to raise its renewable energy target to 52% by 2030, indicating a strong commitment to climate resilience.
The African Development Bank's report highlights Morocco's energy transition and water security, noting a renewable energy capacity of over 5.4 gigawatts in 2025, which constitutes 45% of total installed capacity. This is an increase from 42% in the previous year, prompting Morocco to raise its renewable capacity target to 52% for 2030, three years ahead of schedule.
Energy import dependency has dropped from 97% in 2008 to below 87% in 2024. On the water front, Morocco operates 17 desalination stations producing over 350 million cubic meters annually, with additional projects underway to meet growing demand. The report underscores Morocco's integrated reform agenda as a benchmark for climate resilience in the region.
