AIMS Launches ReefCat Autonomous Vessel for Coral Deployment in Cairns
AIMS has introduced the ReefCat, an autonomous surface vehicle designed to assist in the deployment of baby corals on reefs near Cairns as part of the Pilot Deployment Program. This 3m long vessel, developed by Pipar Automation in collaboration with AIMS, features advanced safety systems, high bandwidth communication, and the capability to run autonomously for at least 10 hours.
During a September mission, the ReefCat surveyed 10 reef sites, utilizing machine learning to identify optimal coral seeding locations. The ReefCat enhances data collection efficiency, allowing scientists to focus on innovative tasks.
It is equipped with multiple payload options for environmental monitoring and can operate in various patterns, including sonar mapping. AIMS plans to expand the ReefCat fleet to improve marine ecosystem management in line with AIMS Strategy 2040, with future capabilities to launch from land for offshore missions.
