Amazon Signs Nine Renewable PPAs in Australia, Boosting Data Centre Expansion
Amazon has finalized nine new power purchase agreements (PPAs) for renewable energy in Australia, marking its largest investment in renewables to date. The agreements, which include wind, solar, and battery storage, support a broader goal of expanding data centre infrastructure and achieving net-zero carbon operations by 2040.

Amazon has signed nine PPAs in New South Wales and Victoria, totaling 430 MW, making it the largest corporate renewable energy purchaser in Australia for the fiscal year 2025. The agreements feature substantial battery storage, including three utility-scale solar-battery hybrids, and an investment of AU$20 billion is planned to enhance data centre capabilities by 2029.
The Golden Plains wind farm project contributes over 201 MW, while additional contracts involve solar-battery projects in various regions, raising Amazon's total to 20 renewable projects with a combined capacity of 990 MW. The integration of battery systems is seen as vital for grid stability and operational reliability amid growing electricity demand from data centres, which is projected to double globally by 2030. The Australian Energy Market Commission is responding by developing regulatory frameworks to ensure data centres contribute to grid infrastructure costs.
