Analysis of Spanish Ports for Offshore Wind Development Highlights Key Limitations
A study of 53 Spanish ports reveals that only six meet the necessary water-depth requirements for major offshore wind operations. This limitation presents logistical challenges as the country aims to expand its renewable energy sector amid environmental concerns.

A recent analysis identifies that only six out of 53 Spanish state-owned ports meet the draft requirements for major offshore wind operations, impacting Spain's renewable energy ambitions. Ports were evaluated based on criteria including storage area availability, berth depth, and navigation-channel characteristics.
The analysis employed methods such as the Weighted Sum Method and TOPSIS to rank ports based on their suitability for various stages of offshore wind development. Under Scenario A, requiring at least 12 metres of draft, Huelva ranked first, while under Scenario B, requiring 20 metres, Ferrol's outer port led the rankings. The findings suggest a need for a coordinated network of specialized ports rather than attempting to equip all facilities for offshore wind, which could improve efficiency and resilience in the supply chain.
