Astroscale UK Advances Orpheus Mission with Critical Design Review Completion
Astroscale UK has completed the Critical Design Review for the Orpheus mission, aimed at enhancing the UK's Space Domain Awareness capabilities. This £5.15 million project involves deploying two cubesats to monitor space objects and track space weather, marking a strategic step for the UK's military space ambitions.

Astroscale UK has finalized the Critical Design Review for the £5.15 million Orpheus mission, tasked with deploying two cubesats to enhance the UK's Space Domain Awareness and intelligence capabilities. The mission, supported by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), involves hyperspectral imaging sensors to track objects in low Earth orbit and monitor space weather.
The cubesats, built by Open Cosmos, will operate in close formation to gather critical data, with a tentative launch planned for 2027. The mission aims to build a foundation for future investments in military space systems, leveraging partnerships with international allies for enhanced surveillance capabilities. The success of Orpheus will hinge on demonstrating the reliability and effectiveness of small satellite constellations against larger military programs for funding allocation.
