Australia Commits to Significant Reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 2035
Australia is embarking on an ambitious path to dramatically reduce its greenhouse gas emissions over the next decade, with a commitment to cut carbon pollution by 62 to 70 percent by 2035. This pledge is part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The federal government has outlined a detailed sector-by-sector plan that, while challenging, is deemed achievable.
The strategy focuses on five priority areas: transitioning to more renewable energy sources, reducing reliance on petrol-powered vehicles and gas appliances, enhancing fuel efficiency, promoting new technologies for industrial decarbonization, and expanding initiatives to capture greenhouse gases directly from the atmosphere. Notably, the energy and resources sectors are expected to shoulder the most significant responsibility for emissions reductions, while agriculture, transport, and heavy industry will also face substantial changes in pursuit of a greener future.
In a global context, Australia's new climate goal aligns closely with those of other developed nations, positioning itself in the middle of the spectrum compared to similar economies. The United Kingdom has set an ambitious target of a 78 percent reduction by 2035, while Japan and New Zealand aim for reductions of 59 percent and 51 to 55 percent, respectively.
To meet these goals, Australia will need to invest heavily in carbon capture and storage technologies, a transformative yet currently costly solution championed by fossil fuel companies. The government is rolling out a series of new policies to facilitate emissions reductions across key sectors, including a $5 billion net-zero fund intended to assist large industrial plants in their decarbonization efforts.
Additional funding will also be allocated to enhance the production of clean fuels, expedite the deployment of electric vehicle infrastructure, and improve energy efficiency awareness among households and businesses.
