Axa IM Alts Invests in Pantheon Regeneration for Pocosin Peatland Restoration
Axa IM Alts has strategically positioned itself at the forefront of environmental restoration by investing in Pantheon Regeneration PBC, a company dedicated to the rehabilitation of pocosin peatlands. This investment, the specifics of which remain undisclosed, is part of Axa IM Alts' broader commitment to natural capital and impact investments. The focus is on scaling Pantheon’s efforts in peatland restoration, with the first undertaking being the Pocosin Ecological Reserve project.
Covering an impressive 14,500 acres in the southeastern United States, the Pocosin project is designed to rewet historically drained peatlands, restoring their hydrological functions. This endeavor not only aims to enhance carbon sequestration but also to rewild the area, creating vital habitats for local threatened and endangered species.
The project involves comprehensive hydrological restoration and active land management, thus enabling these peatlands to reclaim their essential roles as natural carbon storage systems. Such efforts are crucial in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, particularly given that drained peatlands contribute significantly to atmospheric CO2 levels—approximately 21 tonnes per hectare annually.
Alexandre Martin Min, head of natural capital and impact investments at Axa IM Alts, underscored the importance of this initiative. He highlighted that when pocosin peatlands are drained, the natural processes of carbon sequestration are disrupted, leading to substantial increases in greenhouse gas emissions.
This investment not only supports climate change mitigation but also restores essential natural habitats, ultimately generating high-quality verified carbon credits. Pantheon’s ambitious projects are anticipated to diminish the risk of catastrophic wildfires, restore natural hydrology, and protect vulnerable species, marking a significant step forward in ecological conservation efforts.
