Banco Santander Aims for €500M Cost Reduction Through AI Strategy
Banco Santander plans to reduce costs by over €500 million (£433 million) through AI initiatives by 2028, targeting additional revenues of €1 billion. The strategy includes automation and process simplification, reflecting a broader trend in the banking sector towards AI-driven efficiencies.

Banco Santander intends to achieve more than €500 million in cost savings by implementing artificial intelligence across its operations. This initiative is part of a broader goal to generate over €1 billion in total revenues and cost reductions from AI between 2026 and 2028.
The bank anticipates delivering €200 million in business value from AI by the end of 2026, with €35 million already realized in the first quarter of this year. AI will be made accessible to all 185,000 employees, with nearly 40,000 currently engaged with the technology.
The firm aims to resolve around 240,000 annual customer calls through self-service, potentially saving customers and staff significant time. Risks include potential workforce changes as automation increases.
