Bangladesh Government Launches 250 Million Tree Planting Initiative Focusing on Indigenous Species

CARBON CAPTURE

Bangladesh's new government has announced a 'National Green Mission' to plant 250 million trees in five years to combat climate change and environmental degradation. This initiative aims to restore degraded landscapes, stabilize soils, enhance carbon sequestration, and revive wildlife habitats.

However, previous tree planting efforts often relied on fast-growing exotic species, such as Acacia and Eucalyptus, which have negatively impacted natural forest ecosystems like the Sal forests and mixed evergreen forests. The success of this initiative will depend on prioritizing indigenous species to ensure ecological balance.
