Barclays: Autonomous Delivery Robots Could Reduce Food Delivery Costs to $1
Barclays projects that the adoption of autonomous delivery robots and drones could lower food delivery costs to $1 per order, resulting in significant profit increases for the industry. The shift to automation is expected to attract major players like DoorDash and Meituan, potentially unlocking $16 billion in annual profitability by the end of the decade.

Barclays estimates that autonomous food delivery costs currently range from $5 to $7 per order, offering $3 to $4 savings compared to traditional delivery methods. With a long-term goal of reducing costs to $1 per order, the industry could see an annual profitability increase of $16 billion, driven by operational efficiencies.
Currently, autonomous delivery accounts for less than 1% of global food orders, but this is anticipated to rise to 2% by 2030 and 10% by 2035. Key beneficiaries identified include DoorDash, Meituan, and Uber, with Delivery Hero and Grab also positioned for medium to long-term gains as automation pilots advance.
