BARMM and Iligan Diocese Support Mindanao Hydropower Rehabilitation Efforts
The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) and the Catholic Diocese of Iligan endorse initiatives to rehabilitate aging hydropower plants in Mindanao, aiming to enhance renewable energy capacity from 600 MW to 1,000 MW. The rehabilitation of the Agus and Pulangi hydroelectric complex is crucial for energy security and the sustainable management of regional resources.
The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) has expressed support for the rehabilitation of the Agus and Pulangi hydropower complex, aiming to increase its generation capacity from 600 megawatts to 1,000 megawatts. Interim Chief Minister Abdulraof Macacua discussed plans with Department of Energy officials, highlighting the importance of this initiative for energy security and resource management.
The oldest power plant was commissioned in 1969 and requires urgent refurbishment to avoid irreversible deterioration. Two unsolicited proposals for rehabilitation have been submitted, one from a consortium with a cost of P69.72 billion and another from Greenergy Development Corp. for P35.76 billion, both endorsed by the PPP Center. Concerns about potential privatization of these facilities have been raised, with local leaders advocating for government-led management to avoid increased electricity rates and ensure public oversight.
