BC Hydro Expands Mount Lehman Substation to Meet Electricity Demand
BC Hydro is commencing a significant expansion of the Mount Lehman substation in Abbotsford to accommodate rising electricity demand and improve reliability. The project aims to support up to 35,000 additional homes by 2035 and is part of a broader $36 billion capital plan to enhance infrastructure in the Fraser Valley.

BC Hydro will start construction on the Mount Lehman substation in Abbotsford, adding eight feeder positions to improve electricity delivery. The expansion is slated for completion by 2027, with three feeders operational by fall 2026 and the remaining five by fall 2027.
This initiative addresses increasing electricity demand driven by population growth in Abbotsford and Chilliwack, where the population is projected to exceed 500,000 by 2050. BC Hydro currently serves around 120,000 customers in the Fraser Valley Regional District through 13 substations.
Additional regional projects include the Atchelitz and Clayburn substation expansions, both projected to supply power for tens of thousands of new homes by 2028. These efforts aim to bolster the aging infrastructure and support sustainable growth in the area.
