Behind-the-Meter Power Revolutionizes Data Centre Operations
Behind-the-meter (BTM) power is transforming the data centre landscape by allowing onsite electricity generation. This shift is critical as it enables faster deployment, enhances resilience, and provides cost control, particularly in regions facing grid congestion and long connection wait times.

BTM power allows data centres to generate electricity on-site, reducing reliance on public grids and ensuring consistent power supply. This capability is increasingly important as hyperscaler demand grows, with projections indicating that 25% to 33% of new data centre generation will be entirely BTM.
Natural gas is currently the most utilized power source in the U.S., while fuel cells and hybrid solutions combining solar and gas are gaining traction. Analysts highlight that BTM configurations co-located with large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) can enhance power flexibility. To maintain reliability, data centres must implement strategies to maximize uptime when operating off-grid.
