Bengaluru State Finance Commission Proposes Congestion Tax and Waste-to-Gas Plant
The 5th State Finance Commission of Bengaluru recommends a congestion tax on the Outer Ring Road and busy corridors to reduce traffic and generate revenue. The report suggests using Fastag technology for implementation and proposes charges on specific vehicles contributing to congestion. Additionally, it highlights green financing through carbon credits and municipal bonds for infrastructure funding. Meanwhile, an agreement for a waste-to-gas generation plant has been signed, requiring 300 tonnes of waste daily for operation.

Bengaluru's 5th State Finance Commission has recommended a congestion tax for the Outer Ring Road and other busy areas to alleviate traffic and generate funds. The proposal includes using Fastag technology and charging select vehicles that contribute significantly to congestion.
Collected funds should improve urban mobility. The commission also proposed green financing through carbon credits, leveraging existing initiatives like waste-to-value parks. Furthermore, an agreement was signed for a waste-to-gas plant, requiring 300 tonnes of segregated wet waste daily to produce gas for various uses, with an expected execution time of 18 months.
