BHP's Dividend Outlook Amid Energy Transition and Capital Expenditure
BHP's dividend strategy is under scrutiny as high capital expenditure and fluctuating commodity prices impact payouts. With a historical average dividend yield of 7%, the current FY2025 yield is projected at 4.65%, reflecting the company's financial adjustments.

BHP's transition to a primary listing in Sydney in January 2022 eliminated its dual-listing with London. The company's capital expenditure is currently high, particularly in copper investments, which has contributed to a recent, albeit minor, cut in dividends.
The dividend payout ratio has historically averaged 70% of free cash flow (FCF) over the past decade, with a target of a minimum 50% payout of attributable profit as a standard. Despite a solid financial position, with a five-year average net-debt-to-total-equity ratio of 14.9%, the unpredictability of FCF due to commodity price fluctuations complicates dividend sustainability. As BHP focuses on higher-quality coal and transition metals, its dividend yield decreased to 4.65% by FY2025, raising concerns about future payouts amid changing market conditions.
