Bitcoin Developers Propose BIP-360 for Quantum-Resistant Address System
Bitcoin developers have introduced BIP-360, a proposal for a new address format called Pay-to-Merkle-Root (P2MR) aimed at enhancing Bitcoin's resilience against potential future quantum computing threats. This initiative is proactive, as current quantum technology does not pose an immediate risk to Bitcoin's cryptographic systems. The proposal addresses concerns over approximately 6.51 million BTC stored in older address formats that could become vulnerable. Discussions include the potential need for users to migrate coins to secure addresses, which has sparked debate within the community.

The Bitcoin community is exploring BIP-360, a proposal for a new address format, Pay-to-Merkle-Root (P2MR), to protect against future quantum computing threats. While quantum computers currently cannot break Bitcoin's cryptography, BIP-360 aims to secure the network in anticipation of advancements in quantum technology.
Approximately 6.51 million BTC, about 33% of the total supply, is in older address formats vulnerable to potential quantum attacks. Discussions also include a proposal suggesting a migration deadline for users to move funds from older formats to quantum-secure addresses, fostering debate over control and security. Despite the theoretical nature of quantum risks at present, the Bitcoin community is focusing on long-term security planning.
