Bitumen Transportation Incident Results in Fatality
A safety incident involving the transfer of bitumen led to the death of a BD operator after an explosion of superheated steam. This highlights critical safety concerns in the transportation and handling of bitumen in the industry.

A fatal incident occurred during the transfer of bitumen from a hauler truck to a Bitumen Distributor (BD). The BD operator attempted to reverse the pump to clear blockages, which led him to check for flow by climbing on top of the hauler truck.
A cold water-based product was accidentally pumped into the truck containing hot oil-based bitumen, generating superheated steam that caused an explosion of hot bitumen, resulting in severe injuries to the operator, who later died in the hospital after six weeks. This incident underscores the need for stringent safety protocols in bitumen transportation.
