Blockstream Deploys First Post-Quantum Sidechain on Liquid Network to Secure Bitcoin Transactions
Blockstream has successfully deployed the first live post-quantum transaction signing on the Liquid Network, significantly enhancing Bitcoin's security against future quantum threats. This deployment marks the first production use of quantum-resistant signatures on a Bitcoin sidechain, securing actual assets rather than test values. The new solution uses SHRINCS, a compact signature scheme developed by Blockstream, and operates without changing the Liquid consensus rules, allowing for a smooth, opt-in transition.

Blockstream has deployed the first live post-quantum transaction signing on the Liquid Network, enhancing Bitcoin's security against quantum threats. This deployment features quantum-resistant signatures securing real assets, not test coins.
It employs SHRINCS, a compact hash-based signature scheme developed specifically for Bitcoin-like environments, optimized to work within Simplicity's execution model. The solution operates without altering consensus rules, allowing gradual adoption by users.
Currently, Liquid funds rely on ECDSA and Schnorr signatures, which could be vulnerable to future quantum computers. Blockstream emphasizes the importance of preparing Bitcoin infrastructure for quantum threats well in advance.
