Blue Sky Infrastructure Proposes Louisiana Carbon Capture Project Amid Local Opposition
Blue Sky Infrastructure is seeking approval for Louisiana's second carbon capture and storage well in Ascension Parish, facing opposition from local residents. The proposed project includes a carbon dioxide storage hub in the Mississippi River industrial zone near Geismar and Donaldsonville, with plans for seven wells over 30 years.
The first well, under review, aims to inject up to 2.2 million tons of CO2 annually starting in 2027. Residents express concerns about land rights, potential CO2 leaks, and impacts on local infrastructure.
Supporters argue the project will create jobs and stabilize the petrochemical industry, which is essential for economic growth. The project is part of a larger initiative involving over 30 similar proposals in the state. River Parish Sequestration, the subsidiary managing the project, has secured over 80 landowner agreements for access to storage areas.
