BMC Approves Sale of Treated Water from Colaba STP at ₹15 per Kilolitre to Enhance Reuse
The BMC has approved the sale of 10 MLD of treated water from the Colaba STP for non-potable use at ₹15 per kilolitre. This initiative aims to promote water reuse, conserve freshwater, and encourage private participation. Currently, 3 MLD is supplied to a private entity, with the civic body discharging 3 ML daily into the sea due to low demand. The proposal includes logistical considerations and aims to boost the uptake of treated water amid challenges related to demand and infrastructure.

The BMC has approved the sale of 10 million litres per day (MLD) of treated water from the Colaba Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) for non-potable use at ₹15 per kilolitre. This is a reduction from the previous price of ₹21.
The initiative seeks to promote water reuse and conserve freshwater. While the Colaba STP produces 10 MLD, only 3 MLD is being utilized, leading to the discharge of treated water into the sea due to low demand.
The sale will be formalized through agreements with buyers. The civic body faces challenges in demand and infrastructure, as the cost of potable water remains low in Mumbai.
