BMW Discontinues Level 3 Automated Driving System, Shifts Focus to Level 2+
BMW has decided to discontinue its 'Personal Pilot L3' system for Level 3 automated driving, following a similar move by Mercedes-Benz. The system, introduced in 2024 for the BMW 7 Series, allowed full control on motorways but was limited in application and expensive. BMW will now focus on Level 2 automation, offering a new driver assistance system with lower costs and additional functionalities. This shift aligns with the upcoming 'Neue Klasse' models and includes features such as the 'Motorway Assistant' for hands-free driving at speeds up to 130 kph.

BMW has terminated its 'Personal Pilot L3' system for Level 3 automated driving, a decision mirroring Mercedes-Benz's recent actions. This system, designed for the BMW 7 Series and set for a facelift in April 2026, allowed the vehicle to take control on motorways at speeds of up to 60 kph but was costly and limited in functionality.
BMW will revert to Level 2 automation, introducing a new assistance system in the iX3 and 7 Series, including the 'Motorway Assistant' for hands-free driving at 130 kph. The new system will reduce costs for buyers and is expected to be certified for use in 60 countries. Mercedes-Benz has also suspended its Level 3 program, shifting focus to its Level 2++ driver assistance system.
