Brazil Advances Carbon Capture Law at COP30, Paving Way for South America's First CO2 Injection

CARBON CAPTURE

Brazil has finalized its carbon capture framework, marking a milestone for South America with its 2024 Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) law. The country is set to deliver its first CO2 injection without enhanced oil recovery by mid-2026.

At COP30, the CCS law progressed through a draft decree, transitioning towards project authorization and regulatory enforcement. This initiative is supported by Brazil's Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) and the Society for Low Carbon Technologies (SFLCT), which participates in defining the operational framework for carbon capture in Brazil.

Engagements at COP30 included discussions with key figures from the MME and international stakeholders, focusing on the role of non-state actors in CCS. SFLCT's involvement extends to endorsing the CCUS Latin America Conference in Cartagena, Colombia, and fostering coordination between European and Latin American institutions. Additionally, a commitment of $28 billion for CCUS investments was confirmed by the UK, coinciding with the CCS law announcement.
