Brazil Engages U.S. Air Force for KC-390 Tanker Discussions
Brazil's Embraer is in talks with the U.S. Air Force to propose the KC-390 Millennium as a complementary tanker. This initiative addresses current high demand for tanker aircraft amid increased defense spending and operational challenges, particularly in the Middle East.

As of March 28, 2026, Embraer CEO Francisco Gomes Neto confirmed discussions with the U.S. Air Force regarding the KC-390 Millennium as a supplementary tanker solution. The KC-390, with a maximum takeoff weight of 87,000 kg, is designed for operations from shorter airfields, offering flexibility in refueling missions that existing heavy tankers cannot efficiently fulfill.
The U.S. Air Force's current tanker fleet primarily includes the KC-135 Stratotanker and KC-46 Pegasus, which together number between 460 and 500 aircraft, predominantly heavy tankers. This structure leaves a gap in medium-capacity refueling capabilities.
The introduction of the KC-390 could enhance mission efficiency without disrupting existing strategic frameworks. The ongoing high demand for tankers emphasizes the need for diverse operational capacity amid global military commitments.
