Brazil Implements Regulatory Framework for Carbon Capture and Storage in 2023
Brazil has approved PL nº 1.425/2022 to regulate Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), alongside the Future Fuel Project. These initiatives aim to enhance CCS investments and align with global environmental goals.

In 2023, Brazil approved PL nº 1.425/2022, establishing regulations for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) activities, and introduced the Future Fuel Project (PL 4516/23), designating ANP as the CO2 regulatory authority. Brazil is home to significant CCS efforts, including Repsol's CO2 capture units and Petrobras's reinjection of 10.6 million tons of CO2 in 2022, contributing to a total of 40.8 million tons since 2008. With over 40 CCS projects currently operating worldwide, Brazil's regulatory advancements are expected to bolster investments in CCS as it continues to be a critical topic in environmental discourse through 2024.
