BS Energy's Plan for Climate-Neutral District Heating by 2040
BS Energy aims for a fully climate-neutral district heating system by 2040, five years ahead of legal requirements. The plan emphasizes integrating renewable energy sources and improving return temperatures to enhance efficiency.

BS Energy's transformation plan targets complete climate neutrality for Braunschweig's district heating system by 2040, in line with the updated Lower Saxony Climate Protection Act. The current network spans 273 kilometers, serving 17,661 buildings with an annual energy demand of 1,132 GWh.
Following the coal phase-out in 2024, the renewable share of heat generation stood at 34.6%. Major projects include the installation of heat pumps by 2030 and the transition to renewable energy and hydrogen systems by 2040.
The network is expected to expand to 362 kilometers, achieving a 100% renewable energy share. Effective communication strategies with citizens and property owners will accompany these developments.
