Bureau of Reclamation Replaces Valves at Blue Mesa Dam in $32 Million Project
The Bureau of Reclamation is replacing all four original valves at Blue Mesa Dam, a $32 million project initiated in January 2023. The dam, completed in 1966, is crucial for water storage, flood control, and hydroelectric power in Colorado. The project involves replacing two ring follower gate valves and two butterfly valves to enhance safety and reliability. Refurbished components are expected to return for installation in August 2023.

The Bureau of Reclamation is replacing all four original valves at Blue Mesa Dam for the first time since its completion in 1966. This $32 million federally funded project began in January 2023 and aims to ensure the safety and reliability of the dam, which creates the Blue Mesa Reservoir, Colorado's largest water body.
The project includes replacing two ring follower gate valves and two butterfly valves, critical for managing dam operations. The first ring follower gate was removed and sent to California for refurbishment, with installation expected in August 2023. Following this, work will continue on the remaining valves.
