Cambodia Releases New Defence White Paper Amid Regional Tensions
Cambodia's Ministry of National Defence unveiled its third Defence White Paper since 2000, outlining a strategy for modernization and reform of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF). This initiative comes amidst accusations regarding foreign military presence at Ream Naval Base, emphasizing the Kingdom's commitment to sovereignty and regional stability.

On May 12, Cambodia's Ministry of National Defence released an 80-page Defence White Paper, detailing the modernization strategy for the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF). The plan addresses multiple operational facets, including air force capabilities and heavy weaponry, while reaffirming that Ream Naval Base's modernization is vital for the Royal Cambodian Navy.
The paper indicates the government's long-term vision over the next decade, focusing on capacity development and international cooperation. It asserts that such modernization does not threaten other nations, reinforcing Cambodia's sovereign rights. Experts note that regional military enhancements are escalating due to international threats, emphasizing the necessity for robust defense systems.
