Campaigners Demand Overhaul of Scotland's Draft Climate Change Plan for 2026-2040

CARBON CAPTURE

Campaigners from Stop Climate Chaos Scotland (SCCS) are calling for a substantial overhaul of Scotland's draft Climate Change Plan (CCP), which they describe as 'woefully inadequate.' The public consultation on the CCP has concluded, with SCCS highlighting significant shortcomings, particularly in the agriculture and transport sectors.

They criticize the plan's heavy reliance on unproven carbon capture technology and insufficient measures for improving public transport and housing insulation. Stakeholders warn that the new plan for 2026-2040 risks repeating past mistakes, failing to reduce emissions from agriculture, which remains a major source of greenhouse gases in Scotland.

Concerns have also been raised about the unrealistic expectations placed on carbon capture and storage technology, especially following the withdrawal of a key developer from the Acorn project in December 2025. Campaigners stress the need for urgent, actionable measures to effectively address climate change.
