Canada-India Partnership on Critical Minerals and Energy Cooperation
Canada and India are enhancing their collaboration in critical minerals and clean energy, addressing mutual needs in industrial growth and energy security. With vast reserves, Canada aims to become a long-term supplier for India's energy transition and nuclear power expansion.

Canada is positioning itself as a key partner for India in the critical minerals sector, with significant reserves of metallurgical coal, uranium, and rare earth elements. Chris Cooter, the Canadian High Commissioner to India, emphasized that Canada has six billion tons of metallurgical coal, with potential for increased exports to India, which currently imports only a fraction of its coal from Canada.
As the second-largest uranium producer globally, Canada can support India's nuclear goal of 100 gigawatts, of which only 8 gigawatts are currently operational. Canada also hosts one-third of all active rare earth projects outside China and has developed North America's first rare earth processing facility. To enhance supply chains, Canada is expediting mining approvals to about one year and is expanding energy exports, including natural gas and LPG, to meet India's energy needs.
