Canadian Entrepreneurs Develop Nitrocellulose Production from Flax
CellCore Technologies and Sterling Energetics aim to establish Canada's nitrocellulose production, addressing supply chain vulnerabilities. With Ottawa backing domestic manufacturing, the industry could enhance national self-reliance amid geopolitical tensions.

CellCore Technologies Inc. plans to produce nitrocellulose from Canadian flax, investing in R&D to utilize flax straw, a byproduct of the domestic flax industry. The company aims for an annual production of 6,000 tonnes and anticipates groundbreaking for its facility in September 2026, with production starting by 2028.
Concurrently, Sterling Energetics Inc. seeks to establish a defense industrial park in Alberta for various energetics, including nitrocellulose. Canada currently lacks nitrocellulose production, relying on imports from countries like China and the U.S. The Canadian government has initiated efforts to bolster domestic production amid global supply chain pressures, particularly due to military demands related to conflicts in Ukraine and Iran, signaling a strategic shift in defense manufacturing.
