Carbonology to Establish R&D Center in Shanghai's Lingang Zone for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Development
Carbonology, a green technology startup founded by former Tesla vice president Robin Ren, is set to establish its first research and development center in the Lingang Special Area of Shanghai's Free Trade Zone. Announced during a press briefing on August 1, this initiative is part of Lingang's strategic objective to become a hub for innovation, particularly in high-end manufacturing and new energy sectors.
The firm is pioneering the production of sustainable aviation fuel utilizing direct air carbon capture technology, a novel approach that distinguishes it from conventional carbon-capture methods that rely on capturing CO2 from industrial emissions. Ren emphasized that direct air capture offers the potential for a sustainable carbon source over the long term, despite current high deployment costs. Carbonology plans to produce its first barrel of sustainable fuel by the end of 2023, with aspirations to launch a pilot plant capable of producing approximately 1,000 tons annually next year, followed by a large-scale commercial project targeting 100,000 tons by 2027.
In addition to its technological ambitions, Carbonology's R&D center will leverage Lingang's resources, including access to top-tier talent and supportive policies for green energy initiatives. This strategic positioning is expected to accelerate the company's development and commercialization of its air capture technology while minimizing energy consumption and operational costs.
Founded in 2022, Carbonology has successfully completed an angel financing round, securing investments from notable private equity firms, including HongShan Capital Group and the Yellow River Delta Industry Investment Fund Management. Ren, who has a notable background in the electric vehicle industry, previously played a significant role in establishing Tesla's factory in Lingang before departing the company in 2020.
