Chile's Copper Revenue Surges Amid Codelco's Financial Struggles
Chile's copper revenue could exceed US$9 billion this year as prices surpass US$14,000 per tonne. However, Codelco faces significant financial constraints, with a US$34 billion investment plan deemed unfinanceable, indicating potential production challenges ahead.

Chile's copper revenue is projected to exceed US$9.7 billion this year as prices on the London Metal Exchange surpass US$14,000 per tonne. Despite this windfall, Codelco chairman Bernardo Fontaine highlighted the company's inability to finance its US$34 billion investment plan due to nearly US$26 billion in debt, forecasting four difficult years in production.
Year-to-date production is down approximately 9%, with further reductions expected. With copper constituting 50.1% of Chilean exports in H1 2026, the fiscal implications are significant, potentially improving the country's budget position while underlying production challenges remain. The suspension of the Andes Norte project due to seismic concerns further complicates Codelco's operational outlook.
