China Southern Power Grid Plans Majority Acquisition of Transelec
China Southern Power Grid Co. (CSGI) aims to acquire a majority stake in Chilean transmission company Transelec, potentially valued over $4 billion. This operation, ongoing for over two years, is poised to be the largest financial transaction in Chile for the decade.

CSGI, which already owns nearly 28% of Transelec, is negotiating with Patria Investments and a Chinese sovereign fund to acquire holdings from three Canadian pension funds that control around 72% of Transelec. The goal is to finalize this acquisition in the first half of 2026, with an initial target set for March being extended due to tight timelines.
The transaction was initially anticipated for 2025 but was delayed following a blackout in February 2025, where Transelec's Scada system failure was identified as a contributing factor. The potential shift in ownership could impact the governance and strategic direction of Transelec.
