Climate Network Expects Türkiye to Phase Out Coal at COP31
The Turkish Climate Network, representing 16 civil society organizations, announced expectations for COP31 in Türkiye this November, urging the country to phase out coal. A meeting in Istanbul highlighted the need for concrete actions beyond the climate law effective from summer 2025, which aims for net-zero emissions but lacks a clear reduction target.
The law allows up to 10% of revenues from the Emissions Trading System to support just transition initiatives. Türkiye is finalizing a 2030 emissions reduction target and a long-term low-emission strategy for 2053, focusing on renewable energy and nature-based solutions. COP31 will gather nearly 200 countries in Antalya and Istanbul to discuss the Paris Agreement implementation.
