CNPC's Xinjiang Oilfield Achieves One Million Tons CO2 Injection in 2025
China National Petroleum Corp. (CNPC) reported that its Xinjiang Oilfield has injected over one million metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2025, a significant milestone for carbon capture and utilization technologies at an industrial scale.
This injection enhances oil recovery by using CO2 in mature reservoirs, aligning with China's goals for carbon peaking and neutrality. Injection volumes have increased from over 100,000 tons in 2022 to one million tons this year, with cumulative injections surpassing two million tons.
The Junggar Basin, home to the oilfield, is estimated to potentially store up to two billion tons of CO2. This achievement reflects China's efforts to advance carbon capture technologies, addressing technical challenges and supporting a regional carbon utilization cluster. Additionally, capture costs in China may be as low as $30 to $40 per ton, contrasting sharply with over $300 per ton in Europe.
