Colgate Powerhouse Experiences Penstock Pipe Failure, Causing Flooding and Power Outages

On February 13, 2026, the Colgate Powerhouse experienced a failure of the penstock pipe, which carries water from Bullards Bar Reservoir to the Yuba River. The 26ft diameter pipe burst, flooding the powerhouse.
Emergency resources were deployed, and a command post was established at Lake Francis dam. Reports indicate smoke from the powerhouse, although no flames are visible. The gate at Bullards has been shut off, and efforts are underway to close the valve above the burst pipe. Additionally, 923 customers are reported without power, although it is unclear if this is related to the incident.
