Cornwall's Lithium and Geothermal Industries Highlighted on BBC's The One Show
The BBC's The One Show featured Cornwall's lithium and geothermal sectors, emphasizing their role in the UK's critical minerals strategy. With GEL's advancements, the region aims to produce 50,000 tonnes of lithium by 2035, supporting both national security and local economic growth.

Geothermal Engineering Limited (GEL) operates the UK's first geothermal power plant at United Downs, generating electricity and extracting lithium from geothermal brines. The facility is currently producing up to 100 tonnes of lithium annually, with plans to increase this to over 18,000 tonnes within a decade.
The growth of Cornwall's critical minerals sector aligns with the UK's Vision 2035 strategy, which targets 50,000 tonnes of domestically produced lithium. In response to industry needs, Truro and Penwith College is launching a Laboratory Technician apprenticeship in September 2026, aimed at addressing skills gaps in minerals extraction and related fields.
