Cuban President Díaz-Canel Inspects Key Electric System Projects
Miguel Díaz-Canel visited the Latino Transformer Factory and Cotorro Battery Energy Storage System, crucial for enhancing Cuba's electric grid. These projects aim to improve service quality and economic stability as the country strives for energy autonomy despite external challenges.
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel inspected the Latino Transformer Factory and the Cotorro Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), both pivotal for the National Electric System (SEN). The transformer factory aims to produce 10,000 units in 2026, a significant increase from 5,500 in 2025, which will enhance residential service reliability.
The Cotorro BESS, nearing completion with 93% of investment secured, will have a storage capacity of 50 MW, aiming to reduce load-shedding incidents. Together with other facilities, it will contribute to a total storage of 200 MW, essential for supporting Cuba's photovoltaic energy goals of 2,000 MW. The developments showcase Cuba's efforts to achieve technological sovereignty in the energy sector amid external constraints.
