Czech Republic Launches Quantum Network Amid Funding Concerns
The Czech Republic has officially launched its national quantum network, CZQCI, connecting Prague, Brno, and Ostrava. However, funding challenges may jeopardize its integration into the European EuroQCI infrastructure, risking the country’s strategic position in quantum technology.

The CZQCI quantum network, spanning 622 kilometers, connects three major cities and supports Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) to secure data against quantum computer attacks. The network consists of seven nodes, including trusted nodes in Čáslav, Žďár nad Sázavou, and Olomouc, which regenerate keys for secure transmission over long distances.
Current investments total approximately 63 million CZK, with additional funding required to ensure full participation in the EuroQCI initiative. The European Commission has allocated 97 million euros for EuroQCI, which aims for completion post-2030.
The integration of QKD into existing telecommunications is critical for enhancing national security and advancing technological capabilities. As competition in quantum technology intensifies, Czech stakeholders must secure necessary funding to avoid isolation from European developments.
