Decatur residents are urging city officials to reassess a carbon capture project initiated by ADM in 2021, following undisclosed leaks that may threaten drinking water. The project captures carbon emissions from ADM's corn plant and stores them underground.
In March 2024, a leak was discovered in an existing project, though the EPA confirmed it did not affect drinking water. Concerns have arisen as negotiations between ADM and Decatur for a 99-year easement concluded in July 2024, with residents alleging that ADM failed to disclose the leak during discussions.
