Dhaka's WASA Launches Emergency Water Supply Project Amid Growing Demand
Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) aims to address rising water demand projected to reach 3,558 MLD by 2029. The 'Emergency Water Supply in Dhaka City' project will install 388 deep tube wells at an estimated cost of Tk 804 crore by 2028.

To meet the increasing water demand in Dhaka, WASA's 'Emergency Water Supply in Dhaka City' project plans to install 388 deep tube wells at a total cost of Tk 804 crore, with Tk 482 crore sourced from government loans and Tk 321 crore from grants. Currently, water production is 2,977 MLD from groundwater and surface sources, while demand is anticipated to rise to 3,558 MLD by 2029.
This project aims to supply an additional 576 MLD and enhance the water supply system through a SCADA installation. Two surface water treatment plants are under construction, expected to be operational by 2026 and 2028.
The Planning Commission will address several procedural concerns in an upcoming meeting, including the lack of a Medium-Term Budget Framework certificate. Continued reliance on groundwater poses environmental risks, necessitating a shift towards sustainable water sourcing.
