DoD Seeks Direct Property Sale Authority for Infrastructure Funding

The Defense Department (DoD) is seeking congressional authority to directly sell military property, aiming to expedite infrastructure modernization and support initiatives such as the Golden Dome missile defense system. Currently, property sales must go through the General Services Administration (GSA), which the DoD aims to bypass, allowing for quicker transactions and reinvestment of proceeds into defense priorities, including installation management and infrastructure-related projects.

The proposal includes creating a Treasury account for sale proceeds and allowing leasing of sold facilities for up to 50 years. Additionally, DoD seeks to eliminate a $500,000 cap on certain leaseback agreements, facilitating larger projects with private developers. Given the DoD's management challenges with over 700,000 facilities valued at approximately $2.2 trillion, this move could significantly enhance its operational efficiency and funding avenues.
