DR Congo and US Forge Strategic Mineral Partnership Amid Regional Tensions
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) signed a strategic partnership with the US on December 4, 2025, aimed at enhancing cooperation in critical mineral supply chains, including copper, cobalt, and lithium. This partnership is part of a broader strategy to diversify partnerships in the sector and reduce reliance on China.

On December 4, 2025, the DRC and the US formalized a strategic partnership focused on critical minerals, aiming to increase economic cooperation and investment. This agreement aligns with efforts to mitigate the DRC's dependency on Chinese supply chains, notably in copper, cobalt, and lithium.
Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner emphasized the need for diverse partnerships to effectively utilize the DRC's resources for national development. This initiative is connected to a peace process with Rwanda, initiated by a June 27, 2025 agreement, aimed at reducing conflict and attracting investment in the mineral-rich region.
The DRC's state-owned Gécamines and Mercuria are also exploring a deal to prioritize U.S. access to minerals. Additionally, sanctions have been placed on groups smuggling minerals to reinforce transparency in the supply chain. The DRC's ongoing conflict complicates these efforts, with rising violence linked to resource control and foreign involvement.
