DRDO Calls for Accelerated Material Development for Tech Advancement
DRDO Chairman Samir V Kamat emphasizes the need to reduce the material development cycle from 10-15 years to align with shorter technology development timelines. This shift is critical to enhance India's technological capabilities and achieve self-reliance in defense manufacturing.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has highlighted the necessity to shorten the material development cycle from 10-15 years. Chairman Samir V Kamat stressed that current system development cycles are consistently decreasing, with new systems emerging every five years and rapid changes in areas like drones.
To ensure technological advancement and self-reliance, investment in extraction technologies for rare earth resources is crucial, especially given China's dominance in this sector. The DRDO aims to leverage integrated computational materials engineering and AI/ML tools to expedite this process. The military aerospace sector also requires independence from foreign OEMs to enhance strategic autonomy.
