Dutch Parliament Backs AI Data Center Plans Amid Tech Dependency Concerns
The Dutch Parliament supports plans for a significant AI data center in Rotterdam, contingent on pre-commitments for computing power. This strategy may reinforce the dominance of U.S. tech firms in Europe, contrary to the EU's goals of reducing reliance on major tech companies.

The Dutch Parliament has unanimously endorsed the establishment of a major AI data center in Rotterdam, requiring organizations to pre-commit to purchasing a substantial portion of its computing capacity. ABN AMRO notes that this could enhance the already strong market positions of U.S. tech firms, which dominate 75% of global AI computing power, while Europe holds only 5%.
To address this gap, Europe aims to develop five AI 'gigafactories' with a minimum of 100,000 GPUs. Private initiatives are encouraged, but the Dutch government will not provide public funding for the Rotterdam project, leaving market financing as the sole option. The success of the gigafactory depends on the willingness of stakeholders to commit to this venture.
